- As the organic matter is decomposed, microorganisms grow and multiply. In order to retain the organisms (called biomass) within the reactor a membrane filtration tank (MBR).
- The membrane filters the treated water to a quality equivalent to ultrafiltration.
- Aeration is required in the MBR tank to provide continuous scouring of the membrane surface, preventing the build-up of sludge on the membrane surface.
- The treated water will have a quality suitable for feed into a reverse osmosis system for final polishing.
